Welcome to the Semeghini Lab!

The Semeghini Lab is an experimental research group in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University. We investigate highly-entangled phases of matter, trying to find answers to interesting open problems in condensed matter, high-energy physics and chemistry, and we aim to develop efficient protocols for quantum information processing. To reach these goals, we use a quantum platform based on programmable atom arrays with a mixture of alkali and alkaline-earth atoms.

We are part of the Harvard Quantum Initiative (HQI) and of the vibrant Center for Ultracold Atoms (CUA) community across Harvard and MIT.

Open positions

We are just starting our group, so we have open positions at all levels. Visit our positions page to learn more and join our adventure!

News and events highlights

The vacuum chamber assembly is mounted to an optical breadboard. The glass cell, ion pumps, and atomic sources are attached to the titanium main chamber.

Say hi to our vacuum chamber!

On November 23, 2024, we finished assembling our ultra-high vacuum chamber after 2 years of planning, 7 months of preparation and 3 days of installation. In the photo are Yb and Rb atomic sources on the right and a nanotextured glass cell assembly at the bottom. That’s where our atom arrays will be.

We moved to the Goel building, new home of the HQI

In April 2024, once the renovations of the Goel building were concluded, we moved into our new lab (Goel M01). Giulia’s office is now in Goel 314 (easy to remember, it’s pi!) and our group offices are in 312 and 317.

The Semeghini Lab is Born

Giulia will start her new position as Assistant Professor of Applied Physics on January 1st, 2023!

Her first temporary lab space will be located in the Jefferson building in room J156. The lab will move to the newly renovated HQI building at 60 Oxford St in Spring 2024.
